Trigger Finger And Tendonitis In The Wrist Or Hand
What is it?
Inflammation of tendons around the hand and wrist is common and often due to overuse but can also occur following trauma. In the case of trigger finger, the thickening of the tendon causes it to be caught in one of the pulleys in the hand – this causes the finger to become locked in the palm and released with a click and pain.

What causes it?
These conditions are generally due to overuse but can occur following trauma. Certain conditions such as DeQuervian’s tenosynovitis are more common following pregnancy.
What happens if you do nothing?
If you are able to reduce the aggravating factors the inflammation can sometimes settle by itself.

What treatments are there?
Avoiding the aggravating factors and a course of anti-inflammatories is probably the best initial treatment. If this does not work splinting and physical therapy can help. Anti-inflammatory steroid injections can be beneficial and in resistant cases surgical release and removing the inflammatory tissue from the tendon can help. If you have trigger finger this involves a small cut in your palm – generally performed under local anaesthetic.
